Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Food scale
  • Whisk or electric mixer
  • Griddle or frying pan
  • Spatula

Ingredients

  • 8-10 slices regular white sandwich bread
  • 30 g (1/4 cup) all-purpose flour Optional
  • 50 g (1/4 cup) white sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 170 g (2/3 cup) milk
  • 5 ml (1 tsp) vanilla extract
  • 1.3 g (1/2 tsp) ground cinnamon
  • 1.5 g (1/4 tsp) salt
  • butter for cooking

Optional Toppings

  • butter
  • maple syrup
  • fresh berries (blueberries, strawberries, etc)
  • powdered sugar or vanilla sugar

Instructions

  • If mixing by hand: Add the the eggs to the flour and whisk until smooth. Add the remaining ingredients and whisk.
  • If using a mixer: Add all ingredients at once and mix until well combined.
  • Preheat griddle or a frying pan over medium heat.
  • Lightly butter the griddle or frying pan.
  • Dip each slice of bread into the mixture, coating both sides completely.
  • Transfer the coated bread to the hot frying pan. Cook for approximately 4-5 minutes per side, or until golden brown and toasted.
  • Top with your choice of butter, maple syrup, fresh berries (blueberries, strawberries, etc), and dust with powdered sugar or vanilla sugar.
  • Don't waste the remaining mixture! If there's a little left after coating the bread, I usually pour it over the last one or two slices while they're cooking.

David’s Notes

About the flour: The flour is completely optional. I find that adding it gives the French toast a little extra fluffiness and texture, but the recipe works perfectly well without it.
